Senior evacuees in Maggie Valley to soon return home after Florence
More than two dozen seniors who evacuated from Hurricane Florence remain at a Maggie Valley motel, but they plan to return home soon.
Twenty-seven independent living residents from New Bern have been at the Maggie Valley Inn for nine days and look forward to getting home on Sunday.
The residents of McCarthy Court say the journey here was taxing.
“The eight-and-a-half-hour trip was very rough, but once we got here the people could not have been nicer,” Ralph Scott said.
The residents say they’ve received warmth and hospitality from the entire area.
“I've enjoyed this. It's been a forced vacation that was delightful,” Doris Laustsen said. “We have been touring, We have been sight-seeing. We have been spending money and enriching the economy of the area,” she added.
McCarthy Court Independent Living representatives say their facility sustained only minor damage.
“Some roof damage. But all in all, compared to what we've seen in surrounding areas, very lucky,” Carrie Quillen said.
The group will be bused back home beginning at 9:30 Sunday morning.
“We had the best time and I'd like to come back again,” Laustsen said.
