Workers are putting the finishing touches on the AC Hotel, located on the corner of College and Broadway streets.

"We're very excited. The hotel has been under construction for quite some time now," General Manager Michael Hickerson said. "We can't wait to show off all our uniqueness that -what is part of AC Hotel."

Hickerson said that uniqueness includes a sleek, modern decor, and work from 10 local artists displayed throughout the hotel.

Then there's the ninth floor bar and restaurant, Capella on 9, which has an outdoor terrace.

"We really expect to have more locals here than tourists because it's just that kind of place. The views here are outstanding," John McKibbon, of McKibbon Hospitality, said.

McKibbon's group opened the Aloft Hotel several years ago. The AC is the group's second downtown Asheville hotel in recent years.

The hotel's garage includes about 200 public parking spaces, in addition to hotel guest parking.

Just across the street from the AC is the old BB&T bank building, scheduled to become the Arras Hotel & Condos by late 2018.

Some locals expressed concern about the rapid hotel growth downtown.

"I think it's very congested in our town, yes. The roads weren't built for this many cars," resident Rachel Stack said.

However, others who live in the area, like Betty Duncan of Marion, said Asheville is not getting too big yet.

"It's just a great place to live. It's better than living in Florida or up north where it's too cold," she argued. "It's the perfect medium."

Asheville AC hotel is set to open on Friday, August 11. This is the 22nd AC Marriott to open nationwide.
