South Carolina continues to rank among the top ten deadliest states in the nation for women because of domestic violence according to a recent report. While there is a slight improvement from previous years, state lawmakers say more work needs to be done.

According to the 2018 report released by the South Carolina Domestic Violence Advisory Committee, the Palmetto State is the sixth worst in the nation for domestic violence homicides, a slight improvement from previous years.

Beaufort Rep. Shannon Erickson said the committee of lawmakers and local officials collaborated to narrow down three key elements that require more attention by the state. Those include expanding domestic violence education in schools and communities, acquiring additional funds to conduct in-depth studies and creating legislation to better protect survivors.
