YANCEY COUNTY, N.C. -- A community is mourning the loss of a teen after a deadly wreck on Tuesday.

Raeanna McCourry, 16, was a passenger in a car on Highway 80 in Burnsville. The wreck happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Laurel Acres Road.

Troopers say the driver of the car was traveling northbound on Highway 80 when he attempted to pass a car in front of him. While he was in the southbound lane, he noticed a pickup truck coming toward him, so he went back into the northbound lane, but overcorrected.

This sent the car back in the southbound lane but perpendicular. The pickup truck then hit the passenger side of the car where Raeanna was sitting.

Raeanna was taken to Johnson City Medical Center but died around 6:30 p.m.

The driver of the car is a former Mountain Heritage student who has "broken a couple bones," principal Kevin Huskins said. He was released from Mission Hospital around midnight on Wednesday.

Huskins also said McCourry was in JROTC and was expected to take on a leadership role next year.

The district attorney is meeting with a trooper to decide if charges will be filed.
