Transylvania County manhunt called off for the night; suspect still at large
A manhunt that began Tuesday afternoon in Transylvania County was called off about 6:30 p.m.
Sheriff's deputies were looking for a larceny suspect in the area of Everett Road in Pisgah Forest.
Capt. Jeremy Queen with the Transylvania County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as 25-year-old Ryan Todd Bailey.
Bailey is accused of breaking into a home and trying to steal prescription drugs. Bailey was still at the home when deputies arrived. He was interviewed and let go, but deputies approached him again when he dropped some of the medication, Queen said. Bailey then ran from officers, prompting a footchase and manhunt.
The sheriff's office used a helicopter as deputies searched on the ground.
"Canines were called in. Weren't able to get a good track on the canines because, more than likely, he hit the water at some point," Queen said.
According to a post on the sheriff's office's Facebook page, authorities have no reason to believe Bailey is armed or dangerous. However, they urge everyone to use extreme caution if in the area or if encountering the suspect.
Bailey is described as a white male with an average build. He was last seen wearing dark-colored jeans and a maroon T-shirt. He has long dark hair, possibly in a ponytail.
