ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Pharmacy students on the UNCA campus are celebrating a major achievement for the school of pharmacy. US News just ranked the UNC Eshelman school of pharmacy as the number-one pharmacy school in the nation.

The school of pharmacy is technically based at UNC Chapel Hill, but UNCA is its Asheville campus.

The program has 100 pharmacy students who, with staff, celebrated the national achievement.

"We've been number two for decades and the University of California at San Francisco has always been number one. And so we have really wanted to push forward in our domains of teaching and research and education, and to be recognized in this way," said Mollie Ashe Scott, associate dean of the UNC School of Pharmacy.

Faculty say this is validation of the work put into the program.

The Asheville satellite school began in 2011.

Pharmacy graduates can make a starting salary of $110,000 to $120,000.
