You can experience Asheville's brightest holiday tradition at the Winter Lights show at the North Carolina Arboretum.

The display opened to the public Friday night.

There are 500,000 lights in an elaborate set-up. Managers said it took 10 weeks and 500,000 energy efficient lights to bring the winter wonderland to life.

Besides looking at the lights, there are other things for people to enjoy, like holiday tunes, hot cocoa, beer and food.

Visitors can walk through Winter Lights from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. nightly until Dec. 31.

One family that just moved from California to the mountains summed the experience up in just a few words.

"Oh my God. This just blows us away by comparison, just completely extraordinary, probably the best light show I've ever been to, not just in the united states but all around the world," the Fernandez family said.

You must buy tickets in advance, as they will not be sold at the gate.

Ticket prices range from $10 to $18 per person.
