Local police are training to take part in the state's annual pedestrian and bike safety program.

The goal of Watch for Me NC is to reduce the number of injuries to walkers and bicycle riders.

Police officers target trouble areas for increased safety patrols, not only to issue citations but also to thank people for doing the right thing. Another big part of the campaign is education.

You might break the law, but you didn't know you broke the law. So if we teach the people the laws, then better chance they'll obey by the laws, which will in turn make bicycle pedestrian safety better," Durham Police Sgt. Brian Massengill said.

The Watch for Me NC program began in 2012. Buncombe is one of more than 20 counties participating this year.
