An Asheville City Schools summer camp is winding down.

This summer, elementary school students took part in a summer reading program with a focus on science.

Students learned about the solar system and talked about what it would be like to live in outer space.

The young scientists were also shown how to make observations and conduct experiments.

"The theme this summer is to 'launch ourselves into reading,' and so we kind of married science and reading this summer to get better at both of those," Ms. Gretchen Ross, a science teacher, said.

More than 100 students participated in the Asheville City Schools reading camp this summer. Students said because they attended the camp, they feel more confident about starting school at the end of August.
