ARDEN, N.C. (WLOS) — It was a packed house Thursday morning for the Veteran's Day program at Avery's Creek Elementary School. Students and staff invited folks from the community to take part in the celebration. Roberson High's Air Force JROTC performed a flag folding ceremony. Veterans from area nursing homes also attended.
Students said this a special day to thank members of the military for their service
"I think it's important to honor veterans because they served in the military and they helped us get freedom for our country," fourth-grader Claire said.
"Because they go to different countries to fight for us to give us freedom," third-grader Cohen said.
"I think it is because they've done a lot for us and they fight for our freedom," fourth-grader Tate said.
"Not all countries have freedom, but we do because of our vets," third-grader Andrew said.
About 650 people attended the ceremony.
