Black Mountain 4th-graders bring mountain history to life
Fourth-graders from Black Mountain Elementary immersed themselves in history, sharing the stories of some of the famous people who made their mark on the mountains.
Students from Jim Griffin's class got a little help from world renowned storyteller Donna Marie Todd and musician Andy Gwynn for their Visions of the Valley 2017.
The students researched the men and women who influenced Black Mountain and the Swannanoa Valley and then shared their stories with the school.
Griffin said the project helped students understand teamwork and how to make reading and writing come alive.
"We've learned a lot of theatrical skills, how to speak in public. They did their own research, so they wrote their own scripts for the famous people that we know and love," he said.
Davey Crockett, Elijah Mitchell, Billy Graham, Ruth Bell Graham, Harriett Styles, Roberta Flack, Brad Johnson and Roy Williams were among the influential people included in the program.
The storytelling presentation was made possible by a grant from the Kiwanis Club of Black Mmountain - Swannanoa.
