Music, art, and history came together to create an awesome assignment at Claxton Elementary School in Asheville.

Fifth-graders learned about West Africa by building and playing their own drums.

Visiting artist Steven Turner with Giving Tree Music helped the students build the instruments. They used birch wood, goat skins, and beautiful colors to create their original works of art.

"When we learn about these drums, it really helps us, like, bond together, and the experience was really fun," Joe, a student, said.

The students wanted the thank Claxton's PTO for funding the project. The kids said they intend to keep their drums forever.
