Firefighters urge escape plans during National Fire Prevention Week
Asheville, NC – This week, local fire departments join a national effort to help save lives. It’s for National Fire Prevention Week.
The message this year is forming a home fire escape plan. Asheville Fire Department especially wants to make sure kids hear this message.
Kelley Klope with the Asheville Fire Department says firefighters will be visiting kindergarten classes in Asheville City Schools during the month of October. They will be talking with the students about forming a plan and giving them a grid to help them come up with a plan with their families.
Klope says are also tools on the market that can help you escape your home faster, should a fire break out. An escape ladder can be beneficial if you have a home with more than one story. These ladders can be purchased at home improvement stores and online.
The National Fire Protection Association says on average; 7 people die in U.S. home fires per day. The association also says that only one-third of Americans have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.
