About 50 West Henderson High School students had a hand in tackling the project as part of their career and technical education courses. These courses teach skills such as drafting, carpentry, and interior design.
Grace Neve is one of the students who participated in the build and says her favorite part was meticulously staining the wood for the interior elements.
The tiny home is roughly 250 square feet and equipped with a kitchen, living room, bathroom and two loft spaces for beds.
Drafting instructor, Courtney Maddox, had the idea for the student project and says it was a creative way to teach skills that will help the students launch their careers.
Local professionals donated their time and skills to assist with installing the utilities.
Carpentry instructor, Mark Searcy, says he was very proud to see the students believe in themselves and complete the project.
“We had several times where the kids would have that wow moment and they’re like 'Wow!' They start to believe in themselves, believe they can do it and that’s probably the most important thing I teach - is that you can do it,” says Searcy.
Interested bidders have until Oct. 1 to submit a sealed bid to the Henderson County Public Schools’ Central Office.
The minimum bid is $50,000 and the proceeds from the winning bid benefit Henderson County Public Schools and students in the career and technical education courses.
