Thanks to Teachers: Donna Wegner
A long time, big-city teacher said she has found her extended family in Barnardsville.
Donna Wegner, a 4th grade teacher at Barnardsville Elementary School, has taught in California, Washington D.C., Hong King, Seattle and Orlando. But she says she has never quite had the relationships like she does with her 23 students.
"I have a very special relationship with everyone single one of them, and not only that, but I have a relationship with their families, and their parents," she said.
Wegner said sometimes that involvement comes with some extra activities, like scouting, on her off days.
"It doesn't matter if it's Saturday or Sunday. We're just a big ol' family," Wegner said.
Ten-year-old Avanna Lunsford nominated Donna Wegner for Thanks to Teachers. "She's amazing and she's the first teacher I've ever had that I really, really like," Avanna said of her teacher.
Wegner said her tight-knit class is high achieving because of so much family and community support.
Meanwhile, Avanna said Mrs. Wegner has helped her succeed.
"I have learned how to spell better and how to write a five-paragraph essay. I feel really smart, and she doesn't want me to say 'sorry' a lot because she says we're strong women" the 10-year-old said.
Wegner said she could not ask for a better job.
"I'm working at 'Disney.' Everyone is happy all the time," she said.
