Beyond the Scoreboard: 17 WNC teams win first-round playoff games

First-round playoff games on Wednesday resulted in 17 WNC high-school teams winning games in baseball, soccer and softball.

A total of 24 mountain schools lost their first-round games.

With six 1A schools receiving byes, that sets up 23 second-round games involving local teams on Friday, including 14 teams playing at home.

The list includes three undefeated teams – 1A No. 2 Murphy baseball (22-0) hosts No. 18 Mount Airy (11-9).

In the 2A softball bracket, No. 6 Madison (20-0) hosts No. 11 Brevard (19-3) and No. 2 Franklin (18-0) hosts No. 15 Ledford (19-5).

Reynolds and Roberson are still alive in baseball and soccer in 3A play. The Rockets baseball team (19-3) is a No. 3 seed and hosts No. 19 Burns (19-8), while the girls soccer team (18-1-2), a No. 8 seed, hosts No. 9 Weddington (13-7).

Roberson soccer (16-4-1) is a No. 4 seed and will play at home vs. No. 13 Asheboro (16-2-1), while the No. 10 seed Rams’ baseball team (15-10), the defending state 4A champions, travels to No. 7 Robinson (20-5).

No. 5 North Buncombe softball (19-2) hosts No. 21 Sun Valley (13-13).
