Beyond the Scoreboard: UNCG, ETSU to play for SoCon title
WLOS - In a rematch of last season’s title game, top seed UNC Greensboro and No. 2 East Tennessee State will play for the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship and a NCAA tournament berth after both won on Sunday.
Greensboro edged No. 5 Wofford 56-55 and ETSU knocked off No. 3 Furman 63-52 in the semifinal round of the SoCon tournament Sunday at U.S. Cellular Center.
The title game is set for 9 p.m. Monday and will be televised on ESPN2. ETSU won last year’s championship over the Spartans, 79-74.
Greensboro (26-7) rallied from a six-point second-half deficit with a 15-2 run, but Wofford responded with an 11-4 surge to take a 55-53 lead on two Cameron Jackson free throws with 1:24 left to play.
Francis Alonso then scored the game-winner for the Spartans, a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining.
Wofford (21-12) had three shots in the final seconds, but couldn’t convert.
Alonso and Demetrius Troy had 13 points each for Greensboro.
Fletcher Magee scored 14 and Storm Murphy added 13 for the Terriers.
In the second game, the Buccaneers (25-8) took control early and led 32-19 at halftime.
Furman (23-9) fell behind by 23 points in the second half, and couldn’t cut close that deficit closer to 12 points.
Jordan Lyons scored 17 points for the Paladins, who struggled offensively. Furman shot 31 percent from the floor and made only 4-of-26 3-pointers.
SoCon Player of the Year Desonta Bradford scored 20 points to lead the Bucs.
The Spartans have claimed just one SoCon tournament, in 2001.
ETSU has won seven championships, including five in Asheville.
