The Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, presented by Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, is now accepting public applications for the Class of 2019.

That class will be inducted at the 58th WNC Sports Awards Banquet, presented by Ingles, on May 19 at Omni Grove Park Inn.

The banquet, conducted by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club, also honors the top high school athletes and teams in WNC with awards and presents scholarships through the John and Darlene McNabb Charitable Foundation.

Last year, a record 901 people attended the banquet and more than 100 athletes were honored.

Awards are also given to a Special Olympics athlete and for lifetime achievement at the banquet.

Established in 1978, the WNC Sports Hall of Fame has a total of 86 athletes, coaches and administrators.

A committee comprised of the 12 board members of the MAAC accepts nominations to the hall and makes the final decisions on inductees.

Qualifications for nominations include:

  • A native of WNC who has been outstanding in this or any other region, bringing recognition to themselves or WNC.
  • A non-native of Western North Carolina who has been outstanding through their long-standing contributions to sports in this region.
  • All candidates must be inactive in their primary field of participation. This rule may be suspended at the discretion of the board. Candidates who have completed their scholastic or professional careers and are participating in senior or alternate sports careers are eligible for consideration.
  • A candidate upon reaching age 65 becomes eligible without regard to the level of current activity within their sport. Thus, an active candidate having attained that age would not need an exception.

The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. All nominations should include as complete a list as possible of career achievements of the nominee.

Legendary high school coaches Bobby Poss (Reynolds), Cindy Simmons (Smoky Mountain) and Jan Stanley (West Henderson) were the 2018 inductees.

Send nominations and direct questions to Keith Jarrett, Mountain Amateur Athletic Club, PO Box 5272, Asheville, N.C., 28813 or email nominations and questions to keithjarrettasheville@gmail.com.
