Asheville resident Greg Holland, the most prominent free agent to go through the entire offseason without being signed, inked a one-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.

The former McDowell High and Western Carolina pitcher, who has developed into one of the game’s top closers, will get $14 million for the 2018 season.

The righthander saved 41 games – tied for the most in the National League - for the Colorado Rockies last season and helped lead the team into the playoffs, and then turned down a one-year option for $15 million.

He sat out the 2016 season after Tommy John surgery.

Before the All-Star break, Holland saved 28 games in 29 chances with a 1.62 ERA last season.

After the break, he was 2-5 and converted 13 of 16 save chances with a 6.38 ERA.

While helping the Kansas City Royals to consecutive World Series appearances in 2014-15, he saved 125 games from 2013-15.
