WLOS - The UNC-Asheville Bulldogs women's basketball team opened their season with a trip down I-40 to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts. The Bulldogs came out fast, taking a 13-11 lead after one quarter. After that, WCU's Sherae Bonner took over. The senior recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Cats in a 62-52 win. Bonner also recorded four blocks. The victory pulls WCU to 1-1 on the season, while UNCA falls to 0-1.

Khaila Webb led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

"Any time you get a win you feel like you performed well," said WCU head coach Stephanie McCormick. "We did some things that we hadn't been doing very well, and we're defending which is good." WCU held UNCA to 31.6% per cent shooting, and 16.7% behind the arc.

UNCA featured balanced scoring, including getting ten of the bench. However, an ice-cold second quarter doomed the road team as they only registered nine points in the frame. "I always tell the team that you don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great," said UNCA head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatricl. "This is our starting point. We obviously want to improve from here, but we'll be where we need to be come January and February."

The Bulldogs head to Raleigh for a midweek showdown with 17th-ranked N.C. State while the Catamounts host Eastern Kentucky as part of double-header with the men on Wednesday.
