WCU rolls in home opener and other college highlights

Asheville - Western Carolina with an impressive win in its home opener. The Cats crushed Gardner-Webb 44-14 Saturday night in front of over 11 thousand fans. The Cats broke open a 17-14 game in the third quarter with 27 points in the second half.

Freshman quarterback Tyrie Adams led the way with 5 td passes. He also threw for 427 yards and rushed for 83 more. Junior running back, Detrez Newsome had 148 yards rushing and a 52 yard touchdown run in the victory. The Cats play East Tennessee State next Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway..

Appalachian State easily won it's home opener, 31-7 over Old Dominon. Marcus Cox rushed for 3 td's and 133 yards in the win. The Mountaineers scored the first 17 points and were never headed. Next Saturday the University of Miami comes to Kidd Brewer Stadium to take on Appalachian State.

Mars Hill also got a win in their first game at home. The Lions beat Shorter 28-21 in overtime. Jamel Harbison rushed for 139 yards with two touchdowns. The redshirt senior from Charlotte also scored the winning touchdown in overtime to secure the victory. Shorter had a chance to tie the game but a receiver dropped a ball in the endzone. The Lions next game is next Saturday at Limestone.

East Carolina beat NC State for the third time in a row. The Pirates beat the Pack 33-30 in Greenville. ECU scored the winning td on Anthony Scott's 5 yard touchdown run with 5:49 left in the game. NC State missed two field goals and also failed on a fake field goal. NC State host Old Dominon next Saturday while Easd Carolina plays at South Carolina.
